FLY IN, AIRBOAT OUT
ADVENTURE AT NUGGET CREEK
$274 Per Person
From
the start, you will know this is a special trip. You will meet your
representative right at the cruise pier and transfer to the airport, where
you will board a fixed wing Cessna or Piper Cub. The view over the
multitude of glaciers is incredible as you make your way along the
northern escarpment of Glacier Bay National Park to the Tsirku Valley.
Three famous spots, Broken Heart Ridge, Takhin Glacier and DeBlondeau
Glacier will be pointed out as you land at the remote, historic gold mine
site known as Nugget Creek, where you'll have time to explore a real
goldmine.
Your guides will provide a short orientation of the valley as well as
river safety so you feel comfortable with what's ahead. You will get
rubber boots, lifejackets, and more attire as the weather deems necessary
before you board your airboat. This trip is about an hour in length. As
you head downriver, the section of the river that you will travel will
become braided and you will get to experience some swift water (not white
water, though). It will not be long before your craft passes by the sheer
rock walls, the ribbons of waterfalls, and an increase in vegetation is
apparent.
You will reach Devil's Elbow, where you will leave your craft and take a
short ride over three bridges and a busy beaver pond before intersecting
to the beautiful Haines highway.
The highway parallels the Chilkat and Klehini Rivers and the heart of the
Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, known for the largest gathering of eagles in
the world. During the fall and winter months, there are sometimes up to
3500 eagles hanging out here, with the mountains in the background.
You will be taken into Haines where we take you to the ferry for your
return trip to Skagway.
