Before you return to town, you will stop at the delightful Jewell Gardens.
After the first winter, new residents were eager to try their hand at
gardening. In 1898 the successes of the season were reported in the
Skagway News and Skagway's garden history began. By the turn of the
century large farms were established in Skagway and its outskirts.
A 40 acre parcel west of the Skagway River Bridge cultivated by Henry C.
Clark was one of those farms. Clark found rhubarb a fast growing easy crop
in a land where fresh fruit was scarce. His rhubarb patch was so abundant,
locals referred to him as the "Rhubarb King". Rhubarb Syrup is currently
sold in Skagway stores with a label sporting Henry Clark's photo.
The well-trained staff at the gardens will take you on a leisurely
historic tour of the "garden". It is beautifully landscaped with ponds and
a G scale miniature train that runs throughout the grounds.
Lunch comes next and you will be treated to a choice of sandwiches or
quiche, salad, a sweet dessert and a beverage. This portion of the tour
will be a true surprise to find in this city.
