Consider the ferry ride over to Haines as part of your tour. As the ferry sails north to Haines on the Lynn Canal, at 1,600 feet deep, it's the longest and deepest fjord in North America. As the Inside Passage gets narrower, you feel the uniqueness of this waterway. From the ferry, you can catch a glimpse of the white Victorian buildings of Fort Seward backdropped by the 6,500-foot tall Cathedral Peaks. It's a quick 35 minute ferry ride in comfort, but there is something to look at both going and returning to Skagway. A local naturalist will be on board to share information about the fjords and all the wildlife that surrounds this area.

Once you dock, you will board a comfortable bus and ride to all the attractions Haines offers. You will visit the historic Fort William H. Seward, which was the first permanent military outpost in Alaska. Fort Seward is also the home of the Alaska Indian Arts Center, a workshop for carvers and artisans-in-training. The carving rooms you have visited previously don't hold a candle to this one. We observed several projects in progress and were able to talk to the carvers about their own history.

You will also visit the Sheldon Museum, which houses a nice collection of relics and antiques from the community. The museum is interesting to those looking for more information on the military and missionary history of the town.

A lovely drive along the Chilkat Inlet to a picturesque salmon cannery at Letnikof Cove will let you see nature at its most beautiful. Haines is often complimented by travelers for its lack of crowds and for its genuineness. It is a site of cultural imporance to Tlingits throughout Southeast Alaska.
